The last human baby on planet earth was conceived in the ladies bathroom of a nightclub in Tijuana, Mexico, on October 17th 2024. The young couple lost to the world in their fiery passion did not know this. The rest of the world learned about them, and their baby that they named Jesus, much later, thanks to the careful research done by a group of researchers.
Between 1950 and 2021 the fertility rate of humans halved. There was even concern for eventual population collapse if this trend continued. Modern woman just had fewer babies. They were much more educated, independent, and pursued careers. Everyone also had more time and money, and spent it on travel and leisure. Contraception was also so much better. Many couples chose not to have children and just enjoy their lives.
In 2023 it was estimated that 134 million babies were born, and 61 million people died. The world’s population increased by 73 million people. Even though this was a relatively small number, 2023 was a good year, the population grew.
Globally there are about 240 million pregnancies every year. Half of those unintentional, like the now famous Mexican couple. Pregnancy was so common that 30% of planned, and 60% of unplanned pregnancy ended in abortion. When something is common it is not valued.
All pregnancies stopped in the last quarter of 2024. It was surprising that it took weeks before the world realized this, considering how prevalent this condition used to be.
At first there were only scattered reports. News stations reported a notable decrease in new pregnancies in some communities, speculating on the possible causes. As more time passed the facts just became undeniable.
Hospitals and doctors posted their findings on websites and in medical publications. Prospective parents bemoaned the fact that they cannot conceive on social media. The news broke worldwide early December 2024, on a Friday morning, that the human race lost the ability to conceive.
Fridays are often down days for stocks, but this news was devastating. The prospect that there might not be any more babies destroyed the value of many companies. Investors realized that the manufacturers of diapers, formula, medicine, baby food, strollers, car seats and other baby specific products were done for, and a huge sell off occurred, crashing the market.
Billions of dollars were lost globally. In the days that followed orders for new baby products were cancelled, causing the shutdown of factories, leading to mass unemployment. People swarmed convenience stores and fought each other for bread and milk and other staples. Many lost their lives trying to buy gasoline.
Companies that produced food were next to feel the pressure of a changed world. Investors started selling these stocks, anticipating a sharp decline in food production, causing a second market crash in as many weeks.
Many theories and explanations for this global inability to reproduce were published, discussed online, and talked about on television news programs. During this time the Mexican couple was identified and made famous. YouTube went offline for days due to the sheer number of uploads dealing with this phenomenon. Other social media sites suffered outages as well.
The world realized that this will cause the extinction of the human race. Somebody had to be blamed.
Globally people started protesting in massive numbers against food companies. They blamed ultra processed food, high fructose corn syrup, the antibiotics used in the production of meat and poultry, and a multitude of other products for this illness that befell the human race.
These protests were violent from the start. Factories and stores were looted and burned. Pharmaceutical companies were also targeted. In some places managers and workers of these companies were pulled from their homes and beaten to death, or burned in their homes with their families. Those desperate enough to be parents abducted other people’s children leading to more violence an death.
The world was at war with itself, and it burned for six weeks.
Eventually the anger subsided, and was replaced by deep sadness and depression. Countless souls took their own lives, their bodies remaining in their homes. There simply wasn’t anybody that could or wanted to respond to emergency calls. Making phone calls became impossible as basic services ceased. Trash piled up in neighborhoods, gas stations ran dry and stores were empty. Water and electricity supply suffered frequent outages. Internet and phone service stopped.
Relative calm settled on the world as people began to come to terms with the impending extinction of the human race. Hunger and cold brought them together again, motivated them to organize and focus on establishing supply for basic needs.
The world was in shambles. Animals penned and housed on abandoned factory farms died by the millions from starvation. Pets trapped inside homes by themselves suffered the same fate. Tens of thousands of people died in the global riots, and even more died from suicide, exposure, and starvation.
There were no pregnancies during that time of global troubles, and none afterwards. The very nature of society changed. Groups of people lived together in loosely organized communities, growing food and tending to the remaining children. They traded and bartered with other groups. Money was no longer used.
The knowledge that humans would be extinct within the next 100 years brought a strange calm, and a desire to live simply, cooperatively and peacefully.
Considering that all previous generations were replaced every 100 years, one wonders why people were not able to live simply, cooperatively and peacefully then.
On November 2107, the last human being on earth died at the age of 83.
His name was Jesus Hernandez, and he was loved by many.
