This poem is a little too long. This is what you get when you look at your own weakness and failings to get examples of what it means to be human. I have heard the phrase ‘duality of man’, and I absolutely disagree with it. Humans are so much more! We are multifaceted, multi dimensional, good and bad and sad and mad all at the same time. We are beautiful! We are human!

I am merely human
and that is the truth,
and becoming a man
is not always smooth.

I know how to be petty
and I am often sweaty.

I can be very mean
and I am not always lean.

I am sometimes impatient
and often unpleasant.

I have been lazy
and hopefully not too crazy.

I am good at being selfish
and might be until I perish.

I am guilty of bigotry
and often resort to sophistry.

Try as I might
being a good man
does not happen
without a fight.

My very human nature
guarantees my failure.

I have to live and fail and learn
and over time I hope maturity to earn.
I hope there is enough time
for me a man to become.
